University of Lincolnshire and Humberside

The "Learning System" development project at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside
Overview
The University of Lincolnshire and Humberside has been working for several years to put in place a system to exploit communications and information technology. This system is an ongoing development for the University. Initially commissioned to both support and deliver one common 3 year unit across all undergraduates (the skills and capabilities curriculum) it is now being utilised in many more generic ways and also with the delivery of specific subjects.

The system is web based and assumes little about the user’s browser. Virtually all the "intelligence" of the system is server based using Microsoft Active Server Pages, SQL Server for integral databases and CONNX for RMS ODBC drivers to access the corporate database held in RMS data files

Main perceived benefits
  • Access to appropriate information for both students and staff from the Universities Student Management System (SMS) and its Programmes Data System (PDS). These are resident in RMS data files on the main administrative DEC alpha system of the University and accessed via the WWW.
  • An electronic diary for all users, with automatic and manual entries being possible.
  • Basic IT skills materials, study guides in Adobe Acrobat format and interact assessment.
  • Access to subject notice boards and discussion groups for staff and students.
  • On-line assessment creation, delivery and tutor monitoring.
  • Off campus access to services and information to both staff and students either at home or work.
Technologies
The Learning System is now essentially a corporate Intranet web site built making extensive use Microsoft Active Server Pages technology via Microsoft Visual Interdev 1.0.

It is currently hosted on Intel based servers running NT 4, running Microsoft Internet Information Server and SQL server. The system is linked via CONNX for RMS ODBC drivers to the Universities main administrative databases held in RMS data files.
